(More customer reviews)We keep a supply of heater-meals in our 72-hour emergency kit. We cycle through the provisions every 3 months and swap out any provisions that are approaching their 'use by' date. I mention this to demonstrate that we actually do consume the heater meals as part of our regular rotation in lieu of tucking them away in a safe place, untested, untasted, unchecked, unconsumed.
Each Heater Meal contains:
The box (which serves as the virtual oven).
A pouch containing the freeze dried victuals.
A separate pouch of water.
Cutlery (plastic).
Condiments (salt, pepper, etc.).
To reconstitute the meal, you pour the contents of the water pouch into the larger pouch, then seal the larger pouch and place back into the box. The water activates a packet with unoxidized sodium which generates a lot of heat and smoke. I would recommend that you avoid heating up the meal indoors to avoid setting off smoke alarms. The process here is quite well conceived and the packet generates sufficient heat to produce a very hot meal.
Of all the varieties of Heater Meals we have tried (and I believe we have tasted most of the entrees), the Beef Mashed Potatoes and Mushroom Gravy Beef is our favorite. It tastes good enough to feel as though you are eating 'lunch' as opposed to disater rations.
